Unless you’re an insurance professional, understanding dental insurance can be a little challenging. Between the confusing terminology and the litany of numbers, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Thankfully, there’s no need to stress. Dental insurance is a lot easier to understand when you keep these four things in mind.
1. Dental Insurance Is Designed for Preventive Care
Unlike health insurance, dental insurance places a heavier emphasis on preventive care than treatment. This is why your semi-annual exams and X-rays are typically covered at 100 percent, while restorations and emergency care are covered at a lower amount.
Thankfully, there are steps you can take to help ensure you’ll only need preventive care. Be sure to attend all of your dental check-ups and care for your oral health on your own by brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and eating a healthy diet that is low in carbohydrates and sugar. Furthermore, only use your teeth for food: no nail biting, pen chewing, or package opening!
2. Your Dental Coverage Does Not Roll Over
When it comes to the annual services provided by your dental insurance, if you don’t use it, you lose it. This means that if you skip your semi-annual cleanings for one year, you can’t double-up on appointments the next year. This is not only a waste of money, but it can also put your oral health at risk. Save your teeth and your money by taking full advantage of your plan and attend all your allotted dental appointments each calendar year.
3. What to Expect from Your Dental Insurance Coverage
While individual policies will vary, most plans typically follow the same format:
- Preventive care is covered at 100%
- Minor restorations (like fillings) are covered at approximately 80%
- Major restorations (like crowns) are covered at approximately 50%
If you have any questions about your coverage, contact your dental insurance provider or your dentist’s billing department.
4. Check Your Provider Before Selecting Coverage
If you are selecting a new dental insurance provider but would like to keep your regular dentist, be sure to check to see if your dentist accepts that provider or plan. While many dentists will still happily file claims with out-of-network providers at your request, check with your individual plan and dentist to know exactly what you’ll be expected to pay.
Remember, dental insurance is designed to help empower you to protect your teeth and gums by covering your preventive care. While it can still certainly help in the case of emergency or other types of appointments, it works best when you are proactive about your oral health.
